Unit 2 -- Casa y Barrio y Ropa - Spanish Quiz Monday for 3rd and 4th grade

We’ve jumped right into the 2nd quarter learning about our home, neighborhood and clothing in Spanish class. The students are in Unit 2, and following the bookmarks that were given to the students in class. We are just finishing up Unit 2.1  Vocab.
5th grade just had a quiz on Tues over clothing.

3rd and 4th grade will have their quizzes on the vocabulary on Mon. 11/5.

The students should have most of the workbook pages up through p. 20 or 21 completed by now. Students also should have their Vocab 2.1 sheet filled in in Spanish.

We’ll be starting Unit 2.2 next week, and we’ll be completing WB p. 22-24 over the next week and a half. To study for vocab quizzes, the students should review their completed workbook pages and vocab sheet 2.1. It can be helpful to see how much they can translate back to you in English from the pages. They can also use their Vocab sheet to help them with this.

Students may also visit me during Lyceum for extra help.  Thanks for all you do to support our Spanish program!

Spanish quiz on Family Vocab 1.2 - all grades

¡Hola!  All the grades will be quizzed on the family vocabulary 1.2.  All students have the vocab list pasted into their spirals which they keep in their Spanish folders.  The students will also be making some flashcards to study from next class to use for studying.  It would also be good for them to read through  the workbook pages that we have done up to now which are WB p. 5-10.  Wordbanks will be provided for the quiz, and the students will be expected to accurately copy the words down with correct spelling, including accents.  I recommend that students read the Spanish list out loud and tell you what it means in English.  If they are able to do this easily, this shows you they know what the words mean.

3rd grade quiz: Thurs.
4th grade quiz: Thurs.
5th grade quiz: Tues.

Spanish class activities

I have enjoyed seeing the students jump right in with practicing their Spanish through new tonguetwisters, new songs in Spanish, and their first dialogue.  At the beginning of the year I enjoy getting the students out of their comfort zone and more comfortable using the language through these types of activities. Hopefully you are hearing your students sing some part of a Spanish song, or saying some part of "Pepe Piña pica papa..." or trying out a Spanish phrase like, Buenos días.

All the classes did a brief review of the Spanish alphabet and pronunciation of the letters; 4th and 5th grade learned the "mosca" song - just ask your child if they can sing a part of "ini misci piribi in li pirib" and hopefully they'll grin a bit!  We also reviewed how to greet and say goodbye to others.  They recently practiced and performed a short conversation for the class greeting another person and I was pleased to see many students accept the challenge of memorizing part of it!

We have already begun the short chapter on family members, so you will start to see homework having to do with that chapter.  I generally do not assign all the workbook pages for a chapter on one day.  For example, the pages that are for Family Vocab 1.2 will be WB p. 8-10; however, I will spread those pages out over the course of a week to a week and a half.  Then we will start the next Vocab 1.3, and so on.  Each chapter has 3 pages in the workbook, and the end of a unit has 2 pages of review.

During class, we rotate between using the textbook and speaking, reading and listening activities, and then doing a moderate amount of writing to also solidify the vocabulary.

In order to facilitate learning the vocabulary, I encourage the students to make use of the quizlet website or app.  They can also make flashcards if this is preferred.

The quizlet website is:
https://quizlet.com/ACCSpanish345

Click on the correct grade, and then make sure the "sort" is by "alphabetical", and not by "recent".  This will make it easier to find the correct list.

Welcome Back, Archway Spanish Students!

Dear Archway Parents, 2018--2019

¡Hola! My name is Vanessa Watne and I am originally from Pennsylvania. From my youth, I’ve enjoyed learning about other cultures. I earned my BA in Spanish Secondary Education at Grove City College in Grove City, PA. Following college I had the opportunity to live in Mexico City for over 2 and a half years teaching English as a second language and working with cross-cultural teams that came to Mexico to volunteer in various ways. Through this experience I was able to more fully develop my Spanish. I’ve continued to speak Spanish over the years and have enjoyed more visits to Spanish-speaking countries like Mexico, Chile, Peru, and Costa Rica.

I taught Spanish at the high school level for 3 years before raising my children, and then at the elementary age this past year at Archway. I am excited to continue sharing my appreciation for different cultures and the Spanish language in particular with our Archway students this year. It’s been a delight to see how much the students at the elementary level are capable of learning – in their accurate pronunciation, vocabulary, and overall structure of the language!

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Jamie, and our 4 children, Ana, Bjorn, Daniel and Caleb camping, cooking from scratch, reading for fun, being part of our church community, gardening, and hiking, especially in the Southwest winter months!

I look forward to getting to know you and your children this year as we explore the Spanish language together!

Sincerely,

Sra. Watne

3rd and 4th grade Matching quiz this Thurs. 2/8/18

¡Hola!

3rd

The 3rd graders just finished learning about school related words (Unit 3.2) and how to describe what they study at school and what materials they use in class.  You could ask them to tell you in Spanish what they study in the morning at school and a few things they use in class.    Now they are learning about celebrations, concerts, playing sports and playing instruments.  You can ask your child what the 2 different words in Spanish are for play (hint: one is for sports and the other for instruments!), and if they can tell you one thing they like to do after school (Me gusta…).  The students should have workbook pages up through 39 completed by now.

The students have a matching quiz this Thurs. over the words in Unit 3.3.  You can ask the students to study the worksheet with pictures that I had the students write the Spanish words on yesterday.  Those will be the specific ones on the quiz.

4th

4th graders have been learning about what classes they like and what materials they use in class.  They also learned how to say what they like to do in their free time (Me gusta …)  They have a matching quiz this Thurs. (Vocab. 3.3) and they were given a sheet with pictures on Mon. which they put the Spanish word beside.  This would be good for them to study from.  Students should have up through p. 39 in their workbooks completed.

5th

5th graders have been learning about classes and how to say in Spanish which classes are their favorite, the materials they use in class, what they wear to school, and their teacher’s name.  They had a verb conjugation quiz a couple weeks ago.  They are also learning how to tell time in Spanish.  They will be doing a short quiz on time today in class. They should have up through p. 38 completed by next Tues. when we begin working on Unit 3.3.
