Q3 Spanish up-date

3rd grade Spanish classes have been learning about hobbies (pasatiempos) like sports (deportes) and instruments (instrumentos), and how there are two different words for the verb "to play"  - jugar and tocar -- see if they can remember which was is used for sports and which one for instruments.  Yo juego el baloncesto.  Es divertido y fácil.  Yo toco la guitarra y el piano.  Es difícil.   We did a review game with Kahoot in class today.   We were unable  to finish the whole thing in class, so if you're able to have them do this at home, they would really enjoy that!

Here's the information you'll need.

  • They can do -- flashcards, matching, test  for 3.1   3.2  3.3  or 3.4

We have also started learning about the Central American country of Honduras.

4th grade has been practicing writing and reading in Spanish using vocabulary related to school.  Yo juego el fútbol y yo toco el piano.  Mi mamá no juega el fútbol y mi papá no toca el piano. We've also been reviewing how to write sentences about what sports and instruments they play.  Our next chapter will focus on vocabulary related to hobbies. Me gusta mucho jugar videojuegos y leer libros.  Yo juego los videojuegos el sábado y el domingo.  Yo leo todos los días.  They will also be learning about Mexico this quarter -- where the monarchs migrate to, artist Diego Rivera and what Mexico City was originally built on top of.

5th grade has been learning about El Salvador - how they use US dollars there, drink horchata and eat delicious pupusas and ceviche and saw the beautiful wall murals that El Salvador has in many of their small villages – some featuring lots of gatos!  We just finished a chapter focusing on verb conjugation using school vocabulary.  Mi clase favorita es ciencias.  La maestra es Sra. Shasteen.  Nosotros aprendemos mucho en la clase!   ¡Es muy divertida! The students had a quiz over it recently and did very well!  We're now heading into a chapter reviewing how to tell time in Spanish.  Son las nueve menos veinte de la mañana. o  Son las ocho y cuarenta de la mañana.

Hasta luego,

Sra. Watne

Spanish 3-5 up-date Q2 2023 Nov. 7, 2023

All classes celebrated Dِía de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday, last week.   We learned how they celebrate this holiday and we visited the Day of the Dead table and saw the typical decorations, food, candy and candles that are usually included in this celebration.  4th grade saw a beautiful short video about the relationship between monarch butterflies and Día de los Muertos celebrations.  5th grade learned how to make “papel picado” (cut paper) to decorate for the holiday.

3rd grade

·       This quarter 3rd graders are learning about how to talk about their home.  Students are currently working on drawing the main rooms of their home, labeling them in Spanish and writing about their homes.  They will be talking in Spanish about their homes and what color their rooms are.

·       Starting next week, students will learn how to say the words to different places in their neighborhood in Spanish, and we’ll be doing various activities to practice saying and writing the words in Spanish.

·       The students will also learn about Argentina later this quarter and what types of geography, culture and foods they might encounter if they were to visit Argentina. They’ll learn about gauchos, Iguazu Falls, las Pampas and the vast diversity of geography found in Argentina – such as rainforests, Andes mountains, and the glaciers of Patagonia!

·       Link to Quarter 2 vocab       I encourage the students to practice any vocabulary from Unit 2 during Q2 – 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4.  Even practicing once/week will help them!

4th grade

·       This quarter 4th graders have learned direction words like: lejos (far), cerca (near), al lado (beside), enfrente de (in front of), detrás de (behind).  They drew their placement in their classroom and learned how to say where different students were located in the room in relation to themselves.  They also sketched out their home and described in Spanish where the rooms are located in relation to each other.  They learned that Spanish uses a different verb to describe things than to say where things are located, even though in English it is the same verb – is/are.  In Spanish it is -- es/está  -- depending on the context of description or location.

·       This week they will create a drawing of their neighborhood and practice talking to each other about where the places in their neighborhood are.

·       The students will be learning about Paraguay later on this quarter and what types of geography, culture and foods they might encounter if they were to visit Paraguay.  They’ll learn about the dry Gran Chaco, the Pantanal wetlands, Iguazu Falls and Itaipú, the enormous hydroelectric plant that was a collaboration between Brazil and Paraguay!

·       Link to Quarter 2 vocab        I encourage the students to practice any vocabulary from Unit 2 during Q2 – 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4.  Even practicing once/week will help them!            Link to Quizlet vocab for Unit 2

5th grade

·       This quarter 5th graders reviewed clothing vocabulary and added more detail so that they could describe what clothing they would wear if they were playing sports or playing with friends, skiing in the mountains, or if they were at school.    They drew people doing these activities, labeled the clothing in Spanish and then talked with partners about what they were wearing and if they liked those activities.

·       For the next couple weeks, the students will learn about verb conjugation and learning how to form verbs and why it is necessary for writing and talking in Spanish.  We’ll be learning this in the context of what activities we do in certain rooms of our home. For example: Yo como con mi familia en el comedor.   (I eat with my family in the dining room.)  Nosotros preparamos la comida en la cocina. (We prepare food in the kitchen.)

·       Later this quarter the students will get to create their ideal neighborhood and will use their neighborhood to talk about places in Spanish.

·       The students will be learning about Spain later this quarter and what types of geography, culture and foods they might encounter if they were to visit Spain.  They’ll learn how Spain is where Spanish originated, some distinctions in how they speak in Spain v. other Hispanic countries.  They’ll also learn about the flamenco dance, bull fights, the Alhambra, and the Sagrada Familia Basilica, a famous building in Barcelona that has been in the process of being built since 1882.

·      Link to Quarter 2 vocab      I encourage the students to practice any vocabulary from Unit 2 during Q2 – 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4.  Even practicing once/week will help them!   Quizlet 5th vocab practice
