Q4 Spanish up-date 2023

 April 4, 2023                      Spanish 3-5 Update

Quarter 4 Spanish is always a favorite for the students as we practice vocabulary related to animals and food!  (¡animales y comida!) To start, the students have reviewed the vocabulary related to pets (mascotas) and being able to describe them in Spanish.  We’ll be quickly moving to learning a bit about some of the animals found in the country that they learned about 3rd (Colombia)  4th (Costa Rica) and 5th (Puerto Rico).   Each grade level will be doing a slightly different in-class project related to animals in the next couple week.  All work will be completed at school.

After we finish with the animals, we’ll be learning about foods in different countries: 3rd (Republica Dominicana)  4th (Cuba)  5th (Guatemala) and then learning how to say those foods in Spanish and they will have the opportunity to create menus and practice ordering food in Spanish.

I’ve attached our vocabulary sheets in case you’d like to print out to have them practice their words at home.  The students are also encouraged to use Quizlet to practice their vocabulary.

Feb. 15, 2023                    Spanish 3-5 Update

During Q3, all grades practiced with vocabulary about school, hobbies and vacations.

5th and 3rd have also practiced telling time in Spanish.  Son las tres de la tarde.  (3:00pm).  They really enjoyed using their individual whiteboards as a fast way to show me the times I told them in Spanish.

I’ve given the students interactive vocab sheets (see attachments in this email if you want to print out for practice at home) to help learn the new Spanish words. We’ve practiced the vocabulary with partners, mini-dialogues, reading, wordsearches, crosswords, games and whiteboards.

3rd grade learned that Spanish has 2 different verbs for playing – one that’s used for playing an instrument (tocar), and one that’s used with playing with sports/ friends (jugar).  They will be learning about the Central American country of Honduras in the next couple weeks.

4th grade learned to talk about their hobbies and weekly activities using verbs in the 1st person (I).  They also learned some important aspects of Mexican culture, like the how Mexico City was built on a lake, where the monarch butterflies migrate from the U.S. and Canada to a mountain town outside of Mexico City (El Rosario), Diego Rivera, a famous artist, and mariachi music.

5th grade practiced their school vocabulary by learning about the Central American country of El Salvador and some of the similarities/differences they have regarding what classes they take and when they go to school.  They also learned about horchata and pupusas and saw the beautiful wall murals that El Salvador has in many of their small villages – some featuring lots of gatos! We’ll be finishing out the quarter with an in-class project where they will give a small group presentation in Spanish for the class about some of their favorite parts of school.

¡Muchas gracias!

Dec. 16, 2022

I just wanted to thank you all for your wonderful notes, Christmas cards, treats and gift cards.  You truly showered us with kindness and generosity!  Thank you!  I hope you all have a wonderful break!

I decided to leave the Kahoot's open throughout the break in case the students want to try them out.  They are welcome to use any materials they have to help them do it.  Also they can use Quizlet at any time to practice their vocab words.   They just need to click on their grade level and scroll down  until they find the correct list.  I organize them by Units, so we just finished up Unit 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4.

End of Quarter 2 up-date

Dec. 8, 2022

It's been a fast quarter, but we've covered a lot!

3rd grade: Will finish up the quarter with a dialogue which the students help create and then perform in front of their classmates.  Topic -- ¡Vamos de compras!  ¿Qué te gusta comprar?   Me gusta comprar ropa (zapatos, electrónicos, equipo deportivo) (Let's go shopping!  What do you like to buy?  I like to buy clothing (shoes, electronics, sports equipment)

¿Qué tienda te gusta?  Me gusta Target.  (What store do you like? I like Target.)

We'll also be learning a bit about how Paraguay celebrates Navidad.  ¡Feliz Navidad!

4th grade:  Will also finish up the quarter with a more complex dialogue with small groups, pretending they are in a store or market buying clothes, and figuring out if they will buy them or not, based on them being too expensive or not.

The students had a lot of fun doing their first Spanish "Kahoot" in class.  It's a way for them to see what they've learned this quarter.  I thought they might like to try it out at home so I'm giving you the link for them to use.  The link will be available to use until Tues. at 4pm.  It's preferable if they use their first name and first initial of last name instead of a nickname so I know who they are.   It's not required, but I think they will enjoy doing it.  I recommend you remind them of their "estar" verb so that they can get that part correct --- yo estoy, tú estás, él/ella está, nosotros estamos,  ellos están

https://kahoot.it/challenge/02879440?challenge-id=3e3bab6f-db72-4fff-ae9c-2e032c7b6af0_1670515654625

5th grade:  Will also finish up the quarter with a more complex dialogue with small groups, pretending they are in downtown Madrid, visiting different stores/restaurants.

I also have a Kahoot for them to try at home.  Link will work until 4pm Tues.  They should use their first name and first initial of last name.   They will benefit from -ar verb endings    o, as, a, amos, áis, an     -er endings    o, es, e, emos, éis, en  and "estar" verb --- yo estoy, tú estás, él/ella está, nosotros estamos,  ellos están

https://kahoot.it/challenge/3e3bab6f-db72-4fff-ae9c-2e032c7b6af0_1670515159441?&uid=VldhdG5l

The Kahoot links are only for our students, and so it should be a safe platform to use since they won't have access to anyone outside our school community.

Hope they enjoy it!

¡Feliz Navidad y Año Nuevo!

Q2 up-date

November 15, 2022

Vocabulary note:  This quarter in Spanish each grade level are reviewing vocabulary having to do with clothing and colors (ropa y colores),  neighborhoods (barrios/vecindarios) and their homes (casas y apartamentos).    Students can practice on Quizlet for their grade level 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4.   https://quizlet.com/ACCSpanish345/classes   I think this can be valuable practice for the students to do at least once per week to keep the vocabulary fresh throughout the quarter.

Grammar note:  We’re continuing to go in more detail about nouns/adjectives, word order with nouns/adj. and also how to make the verbs match the subject of the sentence, which we call “verb conjugation”.  3rd grade is introduced to the idea with 1 or 2 verbs.  4th grade practices 2-3 new verbs and by 5th grade they are learning about 5 verbs and how to conjugate the verbs and use them in sentences about their family and homes.

Culture note:  This quarter all the grades were able to visit the “Dia de los Muertos” table that we put out each year.  They were all fascinated by the Mexican candy and how it is made of fruit and chili powder.  I offered the students an opportunity to try dried mango with chili powder if they wanted to.  I think many were surprised to find that they liked it!

Projects:  I like to incorporate some in-class projects where the students draw or create a house/ neighborhood or draw some outfits and label in Spanish and then write a guided paragraph in Spanish about what they drew.  3rd grade just completed their house project, 4th grade created a neighborhood and 5th drew the different outfits they wear for school, sports and playing in the snow.

As always, I love teaching the students how to appreciate other cultures.  3rd grade learned that Argentina has “gauchos (cowboys) ” and a very diverse geography, ranging from rainforests to arctic temps in the southern tip.  4th grade learned that Paraguay is a beautiful lush country with an amazing hydroelectric plant (Itaipu Dam) which powers much of the country and also a beautiful waterfall that borders both Brazil and Argentina called Iguazu Falls.  5th grade learned that Castilian Spanish originated in Spain and that they have a specific kind of pronunciation “th” for their s/z which was interesting for the students to practice.  They also were interested to learn about the incredible architecture that the Moors brought to Spanish when they ruled there about 700 years, such as the famous Alhambra mosque.

This week, parents of 3rd graders, you can ask your child what places in the neighborhood they can say in Spanish – bakery (panadería), school (escuela) , park (parque), supermarket (supermercado) , pharmacy, ice cream store, stores…   You can also ask if they can remember any of the names of rooms in their home- bedroom (dormitorio) and bathroom (baño) that we just finished up last week, and what color those rooms are.

Parents of 4th graders, ask them if they can tell you the Spanish words for some of the clothing they are wearing.  Ask them how they could say “the red shirt” in Spanish and where the word “red” goes and if you have to change it because it is describing a “feminine” word, like la camisa.  Answer?  “la camisa roja”

Parents of 5th graders, ask them what verbs you use to say clean, eat, rest, prepare, read in Spanish and which ones are -ar verbs and which are -er verbs and if they can tell you how to say,  “ I rest in the living room.”  Answer:  “Yo descanso en la sala.”    You can also ask them how to say wha they are wearing in Spanish with the color in Spanish.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Con mucho gusto,

Sra. Watne

Q1 Up-date

September 27, 2022

This month we’ve spent a lot of time talking about our families and writing about them.  Each grade level has focused on something slightly different.

In 3rd grade, we’ve focused on how to write simple sentences and to make sure our adjectives change forms depending on who or what they are describing.

In 4th grade, the students practiced expressing someone’s age in Spanish.  In Spanish, we say that “I have 10 years” Yo tengo diez años.  instead of saying “I am 10 year’s old.”  They learned how to say where someone is originally from.  Yo soy de Arizona.  They also worked on making their adjectives plural if they were describing more than 1 person.  Mis hermanos son cómicos.

In 5th grade, the students learned extra vocabulary so that they could say that their brother or sister is older/younger (mayor/menor) and that their parents have children (hijos) and their grandparents have grandchildren (nietos) and their aunts/uncles have nieces/nephews (sobrinos).  The students also practiced how to express the birthdays of different family members, and we joked that if they don’t know someone’s birthday, than it’s el cinco de mayo (May 5th).  Because all the students know how to say cinco de mayo,  it’s an easy way to remember the proper way to form a date!

A lot of time has been spent in class practicing both how to write about their family members in Spanish and also speaking in Spanish about their family members.  I have had the students use the different forms of just 2 verbs to do this -  (ser/to be) and (tener/to have) -- Yo tengo una familia grande (I have a big family. ) Mi prima tiene 15 (quince) años. (My cousin is 15.)   Yo soy alto. (I am tall.)  Mi mama es, mi hermano es… mis primos son… . I really want the students to be able to go back and forth between these 2 verbs (ser/to be) and (tener/to have) in their speaking and writing before we add new verbs.

There is a fair amount of repetition with these ideas because in Spanish quite a few things are new to the students.  In Spanish we put our adjectives AFTER our nouns in sentences, and we have to make sure that our adjectives MODIFY our nouns.  Mis perros negros son simpáticos.  My black dogs are nice.

Also, if you would like your children to work on Spanish at home, quizlet is a great way to have them practice.  The quizlet links are:

EXTRA PRACTICE?   https://quizlet.com/ACCSpanish345/classes   -- just look for the grade level, and then the vocabulary list we are working on.  This quarter it is any of the 1.1 (intro), 1.2 (familia), 1.3  and 1.4 (adjectives and verb ser)

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Con mucho gusto,

Sra. Watne

Quarter 3 2022

 Q3 Spanish up-date

All the students are learning vocabulary related to hobbies, sports, school, cultural activities and telling time.  3rd and 4th grade students continue to learn how to put sentences together in Spanish and how to use adjectives to describe the activities they do.   They also continue to practice their pronunciation each class and how to use Spanish in conversations.  4th and 5th graders are doing more verb conjugation practice and learning how to apply this in the context of their writing about a topic, like school.

3rd grade is learning about Honduras, 4th grade about México and 5th grade about El Salvador.

Each grade has a packet that they work from during class (in addition to their workbook).  I have included a link to it in this email if you’d like to have a copy at home.  Most students don’t bring Spanish homework home, because they often finish it in class or Lyceum, but many students will benefit from practicing their vocabulary a couple times a week at home. You may use this packet or Quizlet for that practice.

Want your student to practice more Spanish at home?

Quizlet is a great place to let them practice their vocabulary.  Students are given a vocab packet each quarter that gives them the vocab lists we are working on for that quarter.  For Quarter 3, we are working through the 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4 vocab lists.

Quarter 2 Spanish 3-5

All classes celebrated Dِía de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday, on Nov. 1 and 2!   We had fun learning about the origins of this holiday and whether you can actually eat sugar skulls!  We also visited Sra. DeCossio’s Day of the Dead table and saw the typical decorations, food, candy and candles that are usually included in this celebration.  4th grade saw a short video on how to make sugar skulls.  5th grade saw a beautiful short video about the relationship between monarch butterflies and Día de los Muertos celebrations.

3rd grade

·       This quarter 3rd graders are learning about how to talk about their home.  This week they drew the main rooms of their home, labeled them in Spanish and wrote about their homes.  Then they shared with partners about how many bedrooms and bathrooms are in their home, and what color their rooms are.

·       Later this quarter, students will sketch their neighborhood and talk about the places in their neighborhood in Spanish.

·       The students will learn about Argentina later this quarter and what types of geography, culture and foods they might encounter if they were to visit Argentina. They’ll learn about gauchos, Iguazu Falls, las Pampas and the vast diversity of geography found in Argentina – such as rainforests, Andes mountains, and the glaciers of Patagonia!

Link to Quizlet vocab for Unit 2

4th grade

·       This quarter 4th graders have learned about direction and how to find places using direction vocabulary: far, near, beside, in front of, behind.  They drew their placement in their classroom and learned how to say where different students were located in the room in relation to themselves.

·       This week they spoke in Spanish with partners about where different people in the class are located.

·       This week we started creating drawing their neighborhood and learning how to talk about where the places in their neighborhood are in relation to their home and school.

·       The students will be learning about Paraguay later on this quarter and what types of geography, culture and foods they might encounter if they were to visit Paraguay.  They’ll learn about the dry Gran Chaco, the Pantanal wetlands, Iguazu Falls and Itaipú, the enormous hydroelectric plant that was an collaboration between Brazil and Paraguay.

Link to Quizlet vocab for Unit 2

5th grade

·       This quarter 5th graders reviewed clothing vocabulary and added more detail so that they could describe what clothing they would wear if they were playing sports or playing with friends, skiing in the mountains, or if they were at school.    They drew people doing these activities, labeled all the clothing in Spanish and then talked with partners about what they were wearing and if they liked those activities.

·       For the next couple weeks, the students will be spending a little time on verb conjugation and learning how to form verbs and why it is necessary for writing and talking in Spanish.  We’ll be learning this in the context of what activities we do in certain rooms of our home. For example: I eat with my family in the dining room.  We prepare meals in the kitchen.  I talk with my friends in the living room.  I clean (or not clean 😊 ) my bedroom and bathroom!

·       Later this quarter the students will get to create their ideal neighborhood, given their preferences and will use this to talk about places in Spanish.

·       The students will be learning about Spain later on this quarter and what types of geography, culture and foods they might encounter if they were to visit Spain.  They’ll learn how Spain is where Spanish originated, some distinctions in how they speak in Spain v. other Hispanic countries, Flamenco, bull fights, the Alhambra, the importance of the Moors in their influence on language, culture, learning and architecture that they brought with them.

Quarter 3 up-date 2021

3rd grade:   This quarter students have been practicing vocabulary about school and their activities.  You can ask your child the following:  ¿Juegas deporte? (Do you play a sport?), ¿Tocas instrumento? Do you play an instrument?  They learned that there are 2 different verbs for our English word “to play”, one for sports (jugar), and one for instruments (tocar).  They have also learned many of their class subjects in Spanish – Math, English, History, etc.  (matemáticas, inglés, historia, ciencias, arte, español, música) They know how to tell you if an activity is fun, boring, interesting, difficult or easy (divertido, aburrido, interesante, difícil, fácil).  I’ve introduced the idea of “verb conjugation”.  They are becoming aware that you need to change verbs depending on who is doing the action.  Yo juego, tú juegas, etc.  (I play, you play, etc.)  We’ve practiced writing simple sentences in Spanish.   Science is interesting and fun.

In class we use a variety of activities to learn, reading letters and dialogues, performing their own dialogues, and practicing pronunciation through reading out loud, and through asking each other questions in Spanish.  They have filled in their workbooks up through page 41.  They also did an in-class project, where they drew their classroom, labeled the objects and then wrote in Spanish about what is in their classroom.  I usually give class time to complete their Spanish homework so that they are able to ask me questions.  If they have time, I’d encourage them to practice their vocab at home by using the Quizlet app or by getting on Quizlet on a computer at home a couple times a week for about 5-10 min.  (see below!)

4th grade:   This quarter the students are practicing vocabulary about school and their activities, and they are building on what they learned last year, to go more in depth, and with deeper vocabulary. We’ve talked about sports, instruments, and we’ve added more activities – playing chess, videogames, reading, listening to music (jugar ajedrez, videojuegos, leer, escuchar música).  We’ve also spent more time with how to conjugate verbs.   You can ask your child, ¿Qué te gusta hacer en tus ratos libres?  (what do you like to do in your spare time?)  The students created a weekly schedule about what they do each week, and they also did dialogues for the class asking classmates what their favorite activity is in the week.

5th grade:  We went more in depth with our school schedules, in how to describe our classes in Spanish and how to tell what time their classes are.  You can ask your child when they have their classes, and have them tell you the class in Spanish and at what time.  (La clase de matemáticas es a las diez de la mañana.)   They can also use more adjectives to describe their classes and their classmates.  They know how to say what classes they like and why.  Me gusta la clase de ciencias.  Es interesante.  As they are practicing describing their classes and classmates, we are going into more detail about noun adjective agreement.  This is the idea that all nouns in Spanish are either masculine or feminine, plural or singular, and any adjective that describes it, also has to match the noun in these aspects.  La clase es divertida.  Las clases son divertidas.   We are also practicing verb conjugation in more depth this quarter.  All of this is good preparation/ foundation for next year when many will be transitioning to learning Latin and its focus on grammar.  The students did a wonderful job creating their ideal classroom based on their favorite subject.  They labeled their classroom in Spanish and then wrote in Spanish about their classroom and their favorite subject.

Spanish Quarter 3

Jan. 8, 2020

¡Feliz Año Nuevo!  We had a great fall semester learning about family, friends, clothing, homes and our neighborhoods, through some creative drawing projects, performing dialogues for the class and interviewing classmates.  We completed Units 1 and 2 and we’re moving into Unit 3 for Quarter 3.

3rd grade Spanish will do a brief exploration of the country of Honduras, and then we’ll dive right into our Unit learning about cultural activities like visiting museums, pyramids and going to sports events, school classes and activities and telling time in Spanish.   The students will paste new vocab lists every couple weeks in their spirals, and they will continue to be assigned workbook pages each chapter.  Workbook pages are started in class and just need to be completed by their next Spanish class, which is on Mon. or Thurs afternoons.   During this Quarter we’ll have a total of 1 or 2 quizzes which will assess their listening skills, vocab retention and short answers.  We will also do a couple dialogues in class.

4th grade Spanish will do a brief exploration of the country of Mexico and then we’ll begin learning the vocab about school classes and materials you use in class; activities that are done in their spare time, and also cultural activities.   The students will paste new vocab lists every couple weeks in their spirals, and they will continue to be assigned workbook pages each chapter.  Workbook pages are started in class and just need to be completed by their next Spanish class, which is on Tues. or Friday mornings.   During this Quarter we’ll have a total of 1 or 2 quizzes which will assess their listening skills, vocab learning and short answers.  We will also do a couple dialogues in class.

5th grade Spanish will begin with a brief exploration of El Salvador, and then we’ll go in greater depth about vocabulary of school classes and some unique aspects of school life in Hispanic cultures.  We’ll also go in more depth about how to tell time in Spanish and we’ll spend some time learning some new verb conjugations and translating Spanish passages into English.  They will have a couple quizzes over the quarter to assess their vocab, listening skills in Spanish and verb conjugations.

VOCAB LEARNING and SPANISH HOMEWORK:
Students can be learning their vocabulary through studying the vocab lists I send home, through https://quizlet.com/ACCSpanish345 or through flashcards.  A good goal is to review the current words 1-2 times per week for about 10 min, and to periodically review previous lists from the current quarter.  The lists for Quarter 3 will be labeled:  3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4.

The workbook pages will be p. 33-46 (These are not assigned all at once, rather 1 or 2 pages every week. )

Quiz for 4th and 5th Grade Fri. 9/13

4th grade – Quiz Fri. 9/13 on Family vocab – includes a listening, writing about their family in Spanish, answering a couple questions in Spanish and fill in the blank section.  Students should study Vocab 1.2, focusing primarily on the Family vocabulary.  They should also study their study guide.  One way to study would be to use their vocab list and see if they can translate the study guide into English (this would test their understanding of the vocabulary). Students should bring their Spanish materials home to study.

5th grade – Quiz Fri.

3rd grade --- Students should be studying their family vocab words, 1.2, and have WB p. 5-10 completed by now.  We will be making a family tree and writing sentences about their family on Thurs.  9/12.
